Acupuncture Follow Up Q & A

by Daniel Abels, L.Ac.

What is an acupuncture follow-up visit?

To be successful at relieving symptoms, acupuncture requires multiple treatment sessions. Once your initial treatment session is complete, your follow-up visits will focus on re-evaluating your condition at each visit to determine what's working and what may need adjustment. In many cases, follow-up care will involve the same type of treatment as the initial visit, but sometimes, the needle placement or techniques used may change based on the way your condition, your overall health and your treatment objectives evolve over time. Before each follow-up session, you'll be asked about your symptoms and concerns, and any potential changes in your therapy will be discussed.

What happens during a follow-up visit?

Your session will begin with a discussion of your health and symptoms, as well as a review of your last session and how you felt afterward, including any improvements in your symptoms or development of new symptoms that require attention. Your current treatment plan will be evaluated and if changes are necessary, they'll be discussed with you before treatment begins. You may also learn about other complementary therapies, including herbal medicines that may help you achieve more complete healing. Follow-up visits are typically not as long as an initial visit since the groundwork for your care will have already been put in place.

How many follow-up visits will I need?

That depends on the condition that's being treated. Acupuncture is a cumulative therapy, which means the benefits build up over time. Many patients continue with acupuncture therapy even after their initial symptoms have resolved, simply as a way to strengthen the body's natural immune system, to balance their health and energy or to treat chronic issues like arthritis or fibromyalgia. You can discuss your follow-up plan of care at your initial visit, and you can revisit it during each appointment to ensure your treatment remains on track.
