- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Although everyone experiences digestive upset occasionally, some people experience it regularly. The standard American diet, high in animal, saturated and hydrogenated fats, low in fiber, high in processed foods, low in complex carbohydrates and low in plant-based foods is commonly the root of digestive complaints. A consistently poor diet may just result in feeling uncomfortable, but may also lead to more serious conditions. Acid reflux, constipation, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and food allergies have become more common. While there are many over-the-counter medications that are used to treat the uncomfortable digestive symptoms, they do nothing to address the underlying cause. Depending on diet and the person’s constitution, a person may produce too much stomach acid or develop a digestive tract that is either hypo- or hyper-active. Certain acupuncture points have been shown to increase or decrease stomach acid and stimulate GI muscle contraction or to conversely relax GI muscles. It is the regulatory ability of acupuncture that makes acupuncture beneficial in the treatment of GERD, IBS and other digestive complaints.
As one would expect, dietary modifications are a likely component of a treatment plan for digestive complaints.
