Every women experiences menopause differently. Women have reached menopause if it has been one year since the final menstrual period. Menopause is a natural, physiological process that occurs in all women. In the United States, the average age is 51. The signs and symptoms of menopause include; hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood swings, increased abdominal fat, thinning hair, a change in libido and vaginal dryness.
While Hormone Replacement Therapy can alleviate some symptoms of menopause, it may also increase the risk of estrogen dependent breast and ovarian cancer.
Chinese Medicine can provide a useful contribution to a reduction in menopausal symptoms through acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary and lifestyle modifications. The treatment for each woman is individualized to the symptoms that are present. Research has shown acupuncture can relieve symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings and insomnia.
A light period lasts only one or two days and requires very few pad changes or tampons. A heavy flow may bleed though a tampon or require frequent changes or be normal flow that lasts more than 8 days.
Elevated estrogen is often to blame for heavy periods. This may be a result of irregularity in ovulation that does not provide a check to the estrogen that is released during the first part of the menstrual cycle. If you have heavy periods, you should first consult your doctor to rule out pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis or fibroids before considering acupuncture and herbal treatment.
Light periods could be a result of low levels of estrogen during the initial part of the menstrual cycle. Excessive exercise, low body fat, high stress or an unhealthy vegetarian diet can all result in low estrogen.
The symptoms of PMS vary widely, but may include irritability, weepiness, agitation, lethargy, nausea, constipation, bloating, swelling, acne, poor concentration, headaches, back pain and breast pain. The symptoms can occur from one day to two weeks before menstruation and will stop at the beginning of the cycle.
Acupuncture and herbal medicine has been shown to effectively treat PMS symptoms. Different combinations of acupuncture points work together to balance hormones and regulate the menstrual cycle. Along with dietary changes and exercise, acupuncture and herbal medicine can reduce symptoms.
